It would be nice if the media mapper could map multiple files to the same pointer field

yes, and to make it inline with the display media by opting into array of pointers by adding an order field in your configuration. Implementation wise, maybe you can use the filename + mapping rules to figure out the order of item to be added in combination with items already existing. Where items which do not get an order from the rules, will be placed in undefined order last.
