When a product is modified the changes are instantly visible on the public website. If a working copy stage (similar to pages in cms) it would be possible to submit updates to a product that are not instantly visible in production.
This would be useful for example when external users (translators/suppliers) are allowed to modify products but these changes need to be reviewed and approved before publish.
