As the moment, you can link to a page (and thereby a category), but you can't link to a product.
So a product picker in the rich text link editor is the idea here.

This a missing feature that is frustrating many customers that working a lot with content on the site. They want to be able to link to product and categories without browsing the external site to get the link to the page.
